What is Sign Language Spelling Bee Competition?

SLIC Hub has unwavering commitment and tireless efforts in promoting inclusive communication and education for a more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to communicate, connect, and belong.

“SLIC Spelling Bee” i.e. Sign Language Spelling Bee (SLSB) aims to not only raise awareness about Kenya Sign Language (KSL) but also foster a sense of inclusive education, community, and understanding among the Deaf/Hearing Impaired and the hearing children.

The event provides a platform for learners to contest and showcase their literacy, comprehension  and proficiency in sign language skills, engage in creative expression, and interact with peers from diverse backgrounds. The event also seek to break down barriers and promote understanding, respect, and inclusion. In addition, the SLSB event  plays a key role in showcasing ways in which caregivers, teachers and other learners can participate, boost and support the Deaf learners, fostering equity in Education and Social integration without limitation in communication.

East Africa Sign Language Spelling Bee Competition (EA-SLSB)

SLIC Hub with support from other partners and stakeholders, have aimed to reach a wider audience of children and engage more communities in this initiative therefore expanding it to the rest of the East Africa community by having the East Africa Sign Language Spelling Bee (EA-SLSB).

Mission

To promote inclusive communication and creating awareness of Sign Language among the hearing.

Vision

We envision a world where everyone is equipped with communication skills and understanding to connect with persons with disability fostering inclusion.

There is nothing as beautiful to behold as when you see a Deaf/HI and Hearing child interact with each other; communication not being a barrier to them.

2024 Sign Language Spelling Bee

The Sign Language Spelling Bee dubbed “SLIC Spelling Bee,” organized by SLIC Hub in collaboration with Action for Children with Disabilities (ACD) and other partners such as; Aga Khan University -IHD, Hand Language Kenya, Gifted Gem, One Planet Publishers, was a monumental event showcasing inclusive communication celebrating Kenya’s linguistic diversity and importance of sing language in promotion of inclusive education. 

The event was held on the 21st of   September 2024 at the University of Nairobi to commemorate the International Day of Sign Languages in the world. The event brought together the Deaf and Hearing Learners from various primary schools and organizations for spirited competition, creative expression, and meaningful engagement.
